The Amature Paleontolgist's Guide to
A fantastic spot for lower Devonian fossils. There are actually two sites here, one along the steep ridge that runs along the road and the other in an abandoned quarry around the other side of the ridge. There are tons of brachiopods in the weathered rocks. This is one of my favorite spots because it's easy to get to and it's real close to the Sideling Hill Exhibit Center. You can't help but spot it on the way, and it's a must-see for rabid rock-hounds.
Directions: From Rt. 68 you need to take the first exit past Hancock, and turn left onto Rt. 144. Then turn left onto Sandy Mile Road. There is wide spot along the road, just before the bridge across Rt. 68, which makes for easy parking. Hike down the short trail that parallels the highway to get to the limestone quarry.
Fossiliferous Formations: The sandstone along the road is Ridgeley Sandstone. The limestone in the quarry belongs to the Helderberg Group.
